Closing in on the new season
With the silliest silly season ever slowly coming to an end, we are now gearing up for a fascinating new season of motor racing, starting off with the three big American races at Daytona and Sebring. Single-seater racing will see more proliferation with the advent of GP3 and AutoGP further muddying the European road to F1, at a time there was hope that the economic crisis would make life simpler for the rising star of the future. On the other hand, we might lose Formula Master because of the cloud of silence hanging over that particular championship since the final test of 2009. More of a worry is the story that the F3 Euroseries is in trouble. What a turnaround for the books that would be: up to last year Euro F3 was the only place GP2 teams would look for talent, and now its future is in doubt. The same seems to be the case with F3 Open-née-Spanish F3. Was the name change a case of overplaying their hand? Conversely, Italian F3 three or four years ago didn't even deserve the F3 moniker, and look where it is going now, with a seemingly unending arrival of new entries. Times they are a-changin'...
